IN DEVELOPMENT / ONE RACING DECISION

Formula Cat: two teammates, one pit box

The cats ride robot vacuums. The interesting decision is when to stop: your battery needs changing, and your teammate uses the same space.

A stop you cannot schedule alone

A cat on a racing vacuum is an immediately readable joke. A shared pit box gives it a reason to be a racing game. Formula Cat puts rookie tabby Mochi into a championship where the longer races require a battery swap. You enter the pit lane, stop in your team’s box and wait for a robot arm to replace the pack.

The developer says your teammate uses that same box, so arriving together can cost time. That is what makes the premise interesting. Going faster is only part of the decision; you also need to choose when to give up the racing line and how that stop fits around another car’s race. The team relationship can become a practical constraint rather than just a shared colour scheme.

This is a single-player game. “Teammate” refers to a character in the racing field, not an announced human co-op partner.

Short races, longer commitments

The announced formats give that stop some context. Three-lap sprints offer the shortest race, while six-lap Grands Prix and ten-lap endurance races require the battery change. The same circuit can therefore ask a different question depending on the event: take the next corner cleanly, or plan a stop before the chequered flag.

Formula Cat also describes final-drive tuning for acceleration or top speed, optional practice and qualifying in Career and Single Race, and difficulty that can be changed. Those are useful ingredients for someone who likes the decisions of motorsport but wants a less solemn setting. They do not establish how the handling feels or how well the rivals behave.

A rookie rather than an empty championship

Mochi has a story around the races. The Steam page introduces teammate Pepper, rival Nacho and reigning champion Luna, with garage conversations, team radio and a paddock newspaper following the rookie’s progress. The planned story has ten chapters across a 23-round season, with the other rounds resolved between chapters. An open career and individual race weekends are separate advertised options.

That distinction matters more than a large track count. The story promises a framed rise through the grid; the career promises repeated championships. One offers a directed rookie season; the other offers repeated championships.

What AI contributed

nitzan.games LLC discloses extensive use of AI coding tools to generate and revise the implementation, including gameplay systems and procedural visuals, under human direction and review. It also credits generative AI for prepared music and sound effects, with assistance for story dialogue and marketing text. The Steam disclosure says the game neither generates AI content nor connects to AI services during play.

That is substantial development work, rather than AI merely appearing as a character inside the fiction. The human direction and review remain part of the production, and the game’s appeal still has to rest on what it asks a player to do.

Follow the Steam edition

At the 23 October check, Steam lists Formula Cat as Coming soon, with no dated release announcement or Steam demo button. There are no Steam user reviews yet.

The reason to keep an eye on it is already specific: a ridiculous-looking vehicle, a battery you must service and a teammate whose timing can become your problem.
